New Franklin  is a relocation of the river town Franklin which was organized in 1816 and destroyed by a flood in 1826. It  was the starting place of the Santa Fe Trail, America's "first commercial highway". The University of Missouri Center for Agroforesty and yearly chestnut roast is located  in the area .The Harris-Chilton-Ruble House, Thomas Hickman House, New Franklin Commercial Historic District, and Rivercene are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. New Franklin is the home of Kit Carson and Sara Evans.  The original school building which is still being used was constructed of native gray
limestone and built by the citizens of New Franklin as a WPA project in the 1930's.
